Sizing a Cane
To measure a cane for the first time user:
The user should stand on hard surface wearing shoes that would usually be worn with the cane. Turn the cane upside-down!
Standing erect, but not stiff, with arm relaxed at the side (elbow will be slightly bent), use a yard stick to measure from the FLOOR up to the MID-WRIST AREA. (see photo) It is helpful for someone else to do the measuring if possible.
A cane is ALWAYS used in the hand opposite the sore hip, leg, ankle, whatever.
Hollywood seldom gets this correct! ; Do NOT use the cane on the same side as the weak or sore leg. When in use, arm will remain slightly bent at the elbow.
Cutting a Cane the Same Height as Another
Remove rubber tips from both canes. On hard surface, such as kitchen floor, turn both canes upside down and mark the new cane at same length as current cane. Cut straight across and replace tip.
